48 Hour Dining Room Transformation

Shocker, I have an issue with Pinterest – I’m fully aware that at times I drive my husband AKA DIYDave crazy. That being said, he’s always up for a challenge and loves turning our house into a home we absolutely love. This entire project took two days and cost roughly $250.

Background

For months I had been scouring Pinterest boards looking for the perfect dining room look after seeing my friend Kristen’s board and batten wall in her Annapolis home.

Dave and I had mapped out the placement of each board and exactly how high the boards should go. Thankfully, from the beginning we were on the same page with colors. White on the bottom, navy blue on the top. We had our entire house painted the perfect grey color prior to moving in 2020.

Non-Pro tip: If you cannot decide on the “right” color just head to your local paint store and ask someone who works there. I told the salesman at the Sherwin-Williams store what I was looking for and it took him all of 5 seconds to pick out exactly what I wanted.

The Decision

So, one Saturday, this past spring we dropped my car off for service at Honda of Annapolis, piled into my husband’s small, but extremely practical, Ford Focus and headed to the best Home Depot in the area.

Non-Pro Tip: Examine each board to ensure the sides are as flat as possible.

The looks, oh the looks, as we piled roughly 10-12 (1/4 in. x 4 ft. x 8 ft) MDF Boards into our small car, packed with two children and two adults.

Lessons Learned

  • Check the width of all MDF Boards prior to purchasing
  • Buy extra boards
  • Measure twice, cut once
  • Install the horizonal pieces first
  • Make sure you have all the right tools and materials, so you don’t have to make 5 different trips to Home Depot in one day
